1. Compound Identification
2. What Is PT-141?
PT-141, known as bremelanotide, is a cyclic seven-residue melanocortin receptor agonist. It is the active metabolite of Melanotan II, formed when that molecule loses an amide group, and it is studied for a narrower receptor profile centered on MC4R. It carries CAS number 189691-06-3 and the molecular formula C50H68N14O10, with a molecular weight of 1025.2 g/mol.
Under the name bremelanotide, this molecule reached approval for a specific medical use. It is supplied here as a research compound in lyophilized powder form for laboratory reconstitution.
3. Research Background
PT-141 was developed in the early 2000s from melanocortin research. A 2020 review by Mayer and Lynch in Annals of Pharmacotherapy covered bremelanotide as a newly approved compound (PubMed 31893927).
A 2022 review by Edinoff and colleagues in Neurology International summarized the research on bremelanotide (PubMed 35076581), and a 2022 paper by Pfaus and colleagues in CNS Spectrums examined its neurobiology (PubMed 33455598). It has a more developed clinical record than most melanocortin peptides.
4. Mechanism of Action
PT-141 acts as an agonist mainly at the melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R) in the central nervous system. That central activity is what distinguishes it from the broader, more peripheral melanocortin activity of Melanotan II. Research connects MC4R signaling to central neural pathways studied in animal models.
Because it focuses on central MC4R rather than peripheral MC1R pigmentation pathways, PT-141 is studied differently from the Melanotan compounds. For current findings, search PubMed directly.
5. Storage and Stability
Lyophilized PT-141 is generally stored at -20°C for long-term holding, with stability reported around 24 months. Refrigeration at 2°C to 8°C suits shorter windows, away from light and moisture.
The lot-specific Certificate of Analysis is the authoritative reference for a given batch.
6. Handling and Solubility Notes (Laboratory Context)
Reconstitution means returning a lyophilized compound to solution. This page gives no preparation procedure: solvent, concentration and handling steps belong to the methodology of the study being reproduced, not to a compound reference. PT-141 is handled as aqueous-soluble material.
Lyophilized material is hygroscopic, so a sealed container is allowed to reach ambient temperature before it is opened. Solubility and water-content figures for a given lot appear on its Certificate of Analysis.
7. Quality Considerations for Research
Identity and purity of research-grade PT-141 are established analytically, by HPLC with mass spectrometric confirmation of the expected mass. Verified purity is documented per lot on the Certificate of Analysis.
Check HPLC purity, mass-spec identity, and net peptide content on the Certificate of Analysis. peptides.com publishes lot-specific lab reports for verification.
